It means that I have a bachelor's degree in “Arts, Letters, or Humanities” — that's why the trim is white. Different colours signify different areas for taking degrees; the commerce students who graduated with us, for example, had hoods trimmed with a sort of peach colour. Here is a basic guide to academic regalia.
